The Fool’s Road — the Hero’s Journey through the 22 Major Arcana

A pilgrimage in twenty-two cards

The Fool’s Road

The Hero’s Journey walked through the Major Arcana — from the first leap into the unknown to the dance that completes the circle and begins it again.

The journey moves in three acts

Act I

Departure

Cards 0 – 5 · The Fool to The Hierophant

The world before the road. The hero begins in innocence and possibility, then gathers what the journey will demand: raw will, inner knowing, the nourishing ground of home, the structures of authority, and a first teacher. These are the cards of equipping — everything answered here is preparation for a threshold not yet crossed. The self is still whole, still untested, still gathering its tools by the fire.

Act II

Initiation

Cards 6 – 15 · The Lovers to The Devil

The road of trials, and the death at its heart. Having crossed the threshold, the hero meets choice, discipline, the inner beast, solitude, fate, and reckoning — and then the great ordeal: an identity must die (13) so a truer one can be born, and the opposites torn apart must be reconciled (14). The act closes face-to-face with the shadow, seeing at last that the chains were chosen. This is the longest, deepest stretch — where the hero is unmade and remade.

Act III

Return

Cards 16 – 21 · The Tower to The World

Collapse, illumination, and the way home. The false structure is struck down, freeing what the shadow imprisoned. Then comes renewal under the stars, one last passage through illusion, and the emergence into clear light. The hero rises to a higher calling and arrives, finally, at wholeness — carrying the elixir back. The World is not an ending but a turning: its completion opens the next Fool’s leap.
